Fela Kuti -- multi-instrumentalist, composer, creator of afro-beat, political revolutionary and legend of mythic proportions -- is a worthy entry into the 101 catalog. Fela has been a major influence and source of inspiration on 101’s apparel aesthetic and history.



We created a custom design for Tony Allen -- Fela’s famous drummer -- which featured a Rich Medina DJ mix of Tony Allen’s tracks back in 2014.



This design pays tribute to Fela -- and features the famous of photo of him as he was being released from a 20 month stay in prison, from a Lagos, Nigeria jail. It shows Fela escorted by his many wives -- which he famously divorced upon release -- in true Fela style. The design also displays various news clippings about Fela’s shows and political activism -- a major reason he was incarcerated.



“Fela” is an essential design for afro-beat collectors and dancers; African jazz, funk and psychedelic music heads, and DJ’s, producers and artists who were influenced by the legend of Fela.
